“Who created God?” sounds like a challenging question, but it treats the Creator of time and space as an object within them. Creation takes place within time; the God of the Bible is the one who created time and space themselves. Time and space are like a canvas on which created things appear. God is not the first brushstroke on the canvas, but the artist who made the canvas.
First, we need to be clear about what “creation” means. Creation takes place within the flow of time: before a certain point, the thing being created does not exist; afterwards, it begins to exist. The Internet, for example, did not exist seventy years ago and came into existence later. Smartphones, too, did not exist before about twenty years ago and appeared later.
What many people do not realise, however, is that time itself has not existed forever: it has a definite beginning. Research by physicists indicates that before the “singularity” of the Big Bang, there was neither time nor space.
The Bible says that God created more than the galaxies and matter within the universe's space and time. He created the whole universe: time, space, matter, energy and its laws. He does more than paint on the canvas; he prepared the canvas itself.
The Creator and his creation are not on the same level. Created things exist within the canvas of time and space; even time and space themselves are created. God the Creator alone transcends time and space. He has no beginning and no end; he exists eternally.
God revealed himself to Moses with the words, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). The Psalms also say, “even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God” (Psalm 90:2).
More wonderfully still, the Creator who transcends time and space can personally enter the time, space and universe he created: “The Word became flesh and lived among us” (John 1:14).
Think of the developer of a computer game who uses code to create a world with its own time, maps, characters and rules. The developer can enter that world as a “player” whenever they choose, yet their own existence does not belong to the time and space of the game world.
So “Who created God?” is a question that helps us clarify our faith rather than defeat it. Christians do not believe in a deity who appeared early in the universe's timeline. We believe in the eternal being who created the universe, including time and space, and who has no beginning and no end.
