Evolution may be the biggest stumbling block for many seekers on their journey to faith — "Science has already proven that humans evolved from apes, so why do we need God?" This article uses an iPhone analogy to help you re-examine this question. Evolution, as a scientific hypothesis, has observational support for explaining micro-level adaptations within species, but faces serious unresolved problems when explaining the origin of life and large-scale jumps between species. More importantly, evolution's explanatory scope is extremely limited — it only addresses biological change and cannot explain where the universe and the laws of physics came from. The more fundamental question — where did this extraordinarily precise cosmic system originate? — points directly to a wise Creator.

You could say the iPhone 17 "evolved" from the iPhone 16 into a new generation — but that kind of "evolution" is clearly the fruit of intelligent design.
Let's run a small thought experiment.
Place an iPhone 16 and an iPhone 17 side by side: similar in appearance, many shared components, a continuous lineage in operating system, obvious functional inheritance between generations. You could easily draw an "evolutionary tree" from iPhone 1 to iPhone 17, with a clear "family resemblance" between each generation and the one before it.
But would you therefore conclude that "the iPhone 17 came from the iPhone 16 by random mutation"?
Of course not. Every advance from one iPhone generation to the next — faster chips, better cameras, more precise sensors — depends on intelligent designers making purposeful, directed improvements. The "similarity" between components doesn't prove "there was no designer." On the contrary, it proves that a designer has been continually iterating on a unified architecture.
Now, shift your gaze from the iPhone to the biological world.
From single cells to human beings, the living world also shows a trend from simple to complex, and species share genetic "similarities" and "inheritance relationships." Evolution says: all of this happened without a designer — through random mutation and natural selection, over billions of years, everything you see today "emerged" from a single primitive cell.
Does this explanation hold up? Let's take a careful look.
Before discussing evolution, one thing must be said clearly: Christian faith is not anti-science.
A widely overlooked historical fact is that modern science was born in large part from the soil of a Christian worldview.
Because they believed a rational God had created an orderly universe, early scientists believed that the natural world was worth studying and could be understood. Galileo, Kepler, Newton, Faraday, Maxwell, Mendel, Pasteur, Planck — the men who laid the foundations of modern physics, astronomy, electromagnetism, genetics, and microbiology were, for the most part, Christians. They did not do science in spite of believing in God; rather, it was **because** they believed in God — because they trusted that a rational Creator stood behind the universe — that they devoted themselves to studying the patterns of what God had made.
Science answers "How": How does the universe work? What is matter made of? Faith answers "Why": Why does the universe exist? What is the meaning of a human life? These two are not opponents — they are explorations of different dimensions of the same reality.
We respect science — it is humanity's most powerful tool for understanding the natural world. But "respect" is not the same as "reverence."
Scientific conclusions are revisable, and that is precisely science's virtue: today's "consensus" may be overturned by new evidence tomorrow. Decades ago, the scientific community believed the universe was eternal (the steady-state model); later it was discovered that the universe had a beginning (the Big Bang). Treating the scientific hypotheses of any given era as "absolute truth" is itself unscientific.
We must also distinguish between "science" and "scientism." Science is a method: knowing the natural world through observation, experiment, and reasoning. Scientism is a philosophical position: it claims that "only science can deliver genuine knowledge" — yet that claim itself was not arrived at by the scientific method. It is a philosophical assertion about the nature of knowledge, not a laboratory discovery.
Christians can (and should) take scientific evidence seriously. But "what the data say" and "what the data mean" are two different things: the same fossil evidence can yield different conclusions under different interpretive frameworks. What we are after is not "anti-science" but the most honest and complete reading of the data.
Before we discuss evolution, one thing must be settled: evolution's explanatory scope is **far narrower** than most people assume.
Many people carry an intuitive sense that evolution can somehow explain "why the whole world is the way it is" — a single evolutionary thread running from the Big Bang to human civilization, connecting everything.
That is simply not true scientifically.
Evolution's core mechanism is genetic variation + natural selection. For that mechanism to operate, one thing must already be in place: self-replicating organisms. No replication, no variation; no variation, no selection.
But here is the problem:
Darwin's own title says it plainly: On the Origin of Species — not On the Origin of Life, not On the Origin of the Universe.
Compared with "where did the various species come from," a far more fundamental question is:
Where did this vast, yet extraordinarily precise physical system — the universe — come from?
The mainstream consensus in contemporary astrophysics is that the universe had a beginning, roughly 13.8 billion years ago, when time, space, and matter all came into existence together. And the universe's existence and operation depend on a whole set of extremely finely tuned physical constants and laws. If certain key parameters were even slightly different, not even stable atoms would exist — let alone stars, planets, chemical elements, or life.
This "fine-tuning" is not something evolution can explain, because physical constants do not "mutate" and get "selected." It requires an explanation on an entirely different level.
Faced with a system this precise, there are two possible explanations:
An analogy: imagine you wake up in a city of one million people, step outside, and find that every single person is wearing a red shirt. How do you explain it — did one million people independently happen to choose red on the same day, or did someone organize it in advance? The answer is obvious: the probability of coincidence is negligibly small.
But the universe is far more staggering than that. The observable universe contains roughly 10^80 atoms, and every single one of them obeys the same set of physical laws. Not one hydrogen atom has ever "decided" to ignore quantum mechanics today; not one ray of light has ever "chosen" to travel at a different speed. These atoms never held a meeting, never signed an agreement — yet without exception they operate by the same precise rules. If one million people in matching shirts tells you "someone organized this," then 10^80 atoms obeying the same rules clearly indicates they were set up that way, not by coincidence. Acknowledging a Designer behind it all is not a retreat from science — it is a reasonable inference from the evidence.
This is the most important inference in this article:
If a Creator designed the entire universe's physical laws — from the gravitational constant to the electromagnetic force to the precise ratios of nuclear forces — then he certainly has the capacity to design life as well.
The specific mechanism of biological evolution (what process God used to create the various forms of life) is a question that can continue to be researched and discussed; that is science's proper work, and Christians welcome it. But the core question has already been answered at the cosmic level: Is there a Designer behind it all? The universe itself has already given a powerful answer. Debating "whether evolution can explain biological diversity" is fighting on a secondary front. The real battle is at the cosmic level — and there, the evidence for a Designer is already substantial.

Although the core question has been settled at the cosmic level, it is worth examining what evolution actually claims in biology — because many people conflate "microevolution" and "macroevolution."
Adaptive change within a species: bacteria developing antibiotic resistance, finch beak sizes adjusting to local conditions, moths of the same species varying in color depth across different environments.
This is extensively observed and experimentally confirmed — no serious dispute exists here. Christians can fully accept microevolution; it simply says that species have God-given flexibility to adapt within the framework he designed.
Large-scale leaps between species: fish becoming amphibians (simultaneously evolving an entirely new respiratory system — lungs, trachea, nasal cavity…), reptiles becoming birds, apes becoming humans (a more complex brain, 24 chromosome pairs becoming 23…).
This has never been directly observed. It is an inference based on fossil records and genetic comparisons. The fact that microevolution is real does not make macroevolution real: the gap between "a finch's beak grew one millimeter longer" and "a fish grew an entirely new, land-adapted respiratory system" cannot be bridged by accumulating small changes — it would require a system-level upgrade to the DNA code.
Back to the iPhone analogy: small upgrades between generations (a new color, a slightly larger battery) genuinely occur — that is "microevolution." But turning a calculator into a smartphone requires not tiny part adjustments but an entirely new architecture — touchscreen, operating system, app ecosystem. These cannot be accumulated through random micro-tweaks.
Part Three has already established the reasonableness of a Creator at the cosmic level. The following are supplementary lines of evidence at the biological level — not prerequisites for believing in God (the cosmic level is already sufficient), but notable supporting observations.
Evolution explains how life changes once it exists. It does not explain where life came from.
Even the simplest living cell is extraordinarily complex — more intricate than any human-built factory. It requires DNA (information storage), RNA (information transfer), proteins (functional execution), and a cell membrane (providing boundaries) all in place simultaneously to operate — and proteins themselves are synthesized according to instructions encoded in DNA. The "primordial soup" hypothesis has yet to produce a living cell from inorganic matter under laboratory conditions.
Even if you threw all of an iPhone's components into a washing machine and ran it for ten thousand years, you would never get a phone that turns on.
To account for the implausibly small probability of complex life arising by chance, proponents of evolution argue that given enough time — billions of years — gradual accumulation could produce diverse forms of life. Yet this "given enough time" premise sits uneasily with some recent paleontological findings.
The research team behind China's 2003 National Natural Science First Prize, awarded for work on the Chengjiang fauna and the Cambrian Explosion, found:
"The Chengjiang fauna dates precisely to the period of the Cambrian Explosion, allowing us to see the true picture of animal life 530 million years ago: a vast variety of animals appeared rapidly during the Cambrian Explosion — virtually all the major animal phyla living on earth today were already present, rather than having arrived slowly through prolonged evolution."
Before the Cambrian (roughly 540 million years ago), the fossil record shows little beyond bacteria and algae — nothing that could properly be called an animal or a plant. Then, in the Cambrian period, more than 50 distinct phyla suddenly appear, including the high-level phylum of vertebrates — after which phyla progressively disappear (rather than multiply), leaving today's 35–38. The actual fossil record diverges significantly from what Darwin's theory would predict.
It's like searching Apple's archives and finding no "37 intermediate versions between the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4" — because each generation was a designed leap, not something that slowly "accumulated" through factory errors.
Biochemist Michael Behe proposed the concept of "irreducible complexity": certain biological systems (such as the bacterial flagellar motor, the blood-clotting cascade, and the visual system) consist of multiple precisely coordinated parts such that removing any single one causes the entire system to cease functioning.
Natural selection only preserves changes that confer a functional advantage — but an eye with "only half its parts" has no visual function. On what basis would natural selection preserve it?
An iPhone's touchscreen requires a display panel + touch sensor + controller chip + software drivers all in place simultaneously to work. You cannot say "first a piece of glass appeared by chance, and a few million years later a sensor randomly grew onto it."
DNA is an extraordinarily precise information-encoding system. The human genome contains roughly 3.2 billion base pairs, encoding all the instructions needed to build and run the entire human body.
In all of human experience, information always comes from an intelligent source: text comes from an author, code comes from a programmer, blueprints come from an architect. Random natural processes (mutations) have never been observed to generate new, functional, large-scale information. The vast majority of mutations are neutral or harmful.
iOS was written by thousands of engineers. Would you believe "the code wrote itself by random keystrokes on a computer"?
"Humans and chimpanzees share 98% genetic similarity" is the most commonly cited argument for a common ancestor. But look more closely, and a vast gulf hides behind that "98%": the 1–2% difference represents roughly 30–60 million base-pair variations — an enormous amount of information.
A chromosomal cliff. Great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans) all have 24 chromosome pairs; humans have 23. The mainstream hypothesis holds that human chromosome 2 resulted from the "fusion" of two ape chromosomes. Setting aside how vanishingly small the probability of such a fusion mutation occurring in a single reproductive cell would be, this "fusion" supposedly also produced a sweeping upgrade: a new blood system, and a brain with dramatically enhanced capacity. Is that kind of "fusion" a random mutation — or a system-level redesign?
Complete blood incompatibility. Perhaps most surprising: human and ape blood cannot be transfused into one another — even where blood types appear to "match." Transfusing ape blood into a human triggers a severe hemolytic reaction that can be fatal. What does "98% similar" really mean when the blood is entirely incompatible?
Complete reproductive isolation. Humans and all living great apes are completely reproductively isolated — not "difficult," but "impossible": different chromosome numbers, incompatible sperm-egg recognition proteins, divergent genomic imprinting, incompatible developmental programs — each one a separate "firewall."
Two iPhone models may share 98% of their components. Which explanation is more reasonable — "random evolution," or "designed and manufactured by the same company"?
A non-believing friend once replied: "Christianity says God first made man, then made woman from a rib; but modern science says male and female apes reproduced together and gradually co-evolved until Homo sapiens appeared."
This sounds reasonable — but what does "co-evolve" actually mean? Follow evolution's own logic: suppose humans really did "mutate" from a 24-chromosome ape. In one generation, a single infant, through a mutation in a reproductive cell, went from 24 chromosome pairs to 23, with 30–60 million base pairs simultaneously altered — and these changes happened to be non-lethal, and happened to produce enhanced function. So "the first human" was born.
Fine. Now this "first human" grows up and wants to reproduce — but faces a fatal problem: every other individual around it has 24 chromosome pairs.
More critically, this is not merely theoretical speculation — it is a part of the hypothesis that has already been experimentally falsified. In the 1920s, Soviet biologist Ilya Ivanov received state funding and made multiple attempts to artificially inseminate female chimpanzees with human sperm. Every attempt failed. Not one pregnancy resulted. If even laboratory artificial insemination could not succeed, naturally occurring "chance pairing" is even less conceivable.
If **humans today** and **apes today** are completely incapable of interbreeding — if even the full resources of the Soviet state could not make it happen in a laboratory — then how exactly did that original individual who "mutated from ape to human" successfully mate with the surrounding apes and produce fertile offspring?
And that friend's phrase — "males and females co-evolving together" — actually exposes the very problem: if they evolved "together," that means 30–60 million base pairs' worth of massive mutations would have had to occur in synchrony. That is not the logic of "random mutation" — it is the logic of "simultaneous upgrade by the same Designer." Just as Apple releases a new iPhone and new AirPods at the same time — the phone didn't randomly mutate a USB-C port while the earphones independently happened to mutate one too. They were designed together.
The Bible is not a science textbook. Its purpose is not to describe in technical detail the steps of creation ("how it was done"), but to reveal who created and why. Yet it gives a clear framework:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1, WEB)
The universe had a beginning, and there was a Creator.
"God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind." (Genesis 1:21, WEB)
"After their kind" suggests that species have a designed framework and boundaries — reproductive isolation being the most obvious of those boundaries.
"God created man in his own image." (Genesis 1:27, WEB)
Human beings are not the universe's accidental by-product but were specially designed by a Creator with intention and purpose.
"I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:14, WEB)
The precision of the human body calls for wonder and gratitude.
"For Yahweh who created the heavens… he who formed the earth and made it… he didn't create it a waste place; he formed it to be inhabited." (Isaiah 45:18, WEB)
Creation is not purposeless. God made a world fit for human habitation — a striking resonance with the scientific discovery of cosmic fine-tuning.
We need not read Genesis as a science paper. But the framework Genesis provides — that all things are not accidental, that behind everything stands a wise and purposeful Creator — aligns remarkably well with what we observe at the cosmic level: exquisite design pointing to a Designer.
Let's return to where we began.
Every advance in each iPhone generation depends on a designer's intelligence. The similarity between components, the inheritance between generations — these do not prove "there was no designer." On the contrary, they prove that a designer has been continuously at work within a unified architecture.
When you see an iPhone, you do not say "this is what metal and glass produced after billions of years of random collisions." You know there is a designer behind it.
When you see the human body — a billion times more precise than any iPhone: a genome of 3.2 billion base pairs, 37 trillion cells working in concert, a network of 86 billion neurons in the brain, all of it unfolding from a single fertilized egg — concluding that there is a Designer behind it all is not superstition. It is the rational inference.
And when you look further still — at the universe that makes DNA, cells, and brains possible in the first place, every atom of which automatically obeys the same invisible laws — you are no longer facing merely the question of whether biology was designed. You are facing this: the entire stage — from gravity to electromagnetism to the nuclear forces, from atoms to galaxies to your own mind — was designed.
Evolution may account for the incremental refinements between iPhone generations, but it cannot explain why Apple exists, why Silicon Valley exists, or why the laws of physics permit semiconductors to exist at all. To answer those more fundamental questions, you need a larger framework.
The Bible gives that framework:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."
You do not have to choose between "science" and "faith." Study science seriously, and it will deepen your wonder at the precision of God's creation. Know God seriously, and he will show you why you exist and where you are going.

Dear friend, you are not the universe's accident — you are designed. The One who designed you is still waiting, today, for you to know him.
Let us pray together:
God, Creator of all things — when I look up at the night sky, when I consider the intricacy of the human body, when I ask why this universe is so perfectly calibrated — I am deeply moved. Help me not to be easily dismissed by the claim that "science has already explained everything," but to pursue with genuine curiosity and honesty the question: Is there a Designer behind all of this? If there is — who is he? Why did he make me? Open my eyes to see the truth that can already be known through what has been made. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen.
