About this hymn

With titles of honour and shouts of welcome, this song greets Jesus and acknowledges him as the King who deserves the worship of heaven and earth. Matthew 21 describes the crowds welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem; as we continue reading the Gospels, we see this King willingly going to the cross. The celebration with palm branches can therefore lead the church to a deeper understanding of his path of redemption. As we sing, we can join honouring him with following him and consider whether we are willing to accept his humble, just and merciful rule. The confession in Philippians that all creation will acknowledge Jesus as Lord also enables today’s congregation to offer him loyalty in everyday life with hope.

When to use this hymn
