Exodus 6:7 gives the covenant’s most important statement: “I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God”. Scripture repeatedly returns to this pattern, right through to the end of Revelation. Psalm 100:3 approaches it from the other side: “It is he who has made us, and we are his. We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” The song therefore acknowledges an established relationship, beyond making a claim of ownership. It suits congregational singing, especially baptism and Communion, when the covenant becomes visible.
