The worshipper of Psalm 73 enters the sanctuary amid perplexity and envy, then recognises afresh that God is the strength of his heart and his portion for ever. Calling Christ our dearest love means having all our affections corrected in him. Family, work and the beauty of creation need not be despised, but cannot replace the Saviour. The surpassing treasure described in Philippians 3 also leads towards knowing Christ, sharing his sufferings and pursuing resurrection. Bring the song’s intense language of love back into discipleship, where love for the Lord becomes listening, obedience and love for neighbours.
