The pilgrim journey · Service and gifts
This prayer moves from willingness to be sent, through acknowledging our own weakness, to a plea for unity among coworkers. The picture of the vine and its branches comes from John 15 and reminds us that the vitality of ministry comes from continually abiding in Christ; the prayer in chapter 17 connects the disciples’ unity with the world coming to know the Lord. The desire for power expressed in the song should be understood together with humble dependence and faithfulness to the gospel, entrusting the results of our work to the Lord. As we sing, we can pray for particular people in ministry, our relationships with one another and those we are reaching. We ask the Lord to sustain limited people by his grace, so that everyone’s gifts serve his church together.
