About this hymn

First Corinthians 1:18 says that the message of the cross is foolishness to those perishing and God's power to those being saved. The event is the same; the difference lies in where its observers stand. In Galatians 6:14, Paul refuses to boast in anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Applying the word boasting to an instrument of execution jars, and that offence has belonged to the gospel from the beginning. This song emphasises that it is because of him. The power belongs to the one crucified there, rather than to the cross by itself.

When to use this hymn

Holy Week and Communion; teaching on the message of the cross or the offence of the gospel.
