Redeeming grace · Precious blood and cleansing
The song uses the image of white snow to express a longing for forgiveness and inward renewal, bringing idols, self-centredness and sins we find difficult to relinquish before the Saviour. The prayer for cleansing in Psalm 51 provides an important background for understanding this hymn; 1 John points out that our cleansing rests on Jesus shedding his blood for us. We can humbly ask the Lord to renew us and be willing to hand the rule of our lives back to him. Such prayer is appropriately accompanied by specific confession and change: acknowledging harm we have caused, seeking reconciliation or stopping a choice we know is wrong. The Lord’s grace both forgives us and teaches us to learn godliness in the life we live today.
