About this hymn

Answering Jesus’ call to take up the cross and follow him, this hymn uses Gethsemane and trial to express willingness to walk with the Lord. Mark centres discipleship on self-denial; First Peter guides suffering believers to learn from Christ’s example. Commitment needs everyday expression: honesty when wronged, willing responsibility in difficult service and seeking the Lord’s will when personal plans fail. Remember that strength to follow comes from the Saviour’s prior grace. Brothers and sisters can pray for and support one another, learning loyalty to him step by step.

When to use this hymn

Dedication and mission gatherings, Holy Week, sermon responses and examination of discipleship.
