Hope for the end of the age · Eternal life and rest
The hope of this hymn is centred on a person. John 14:2 says, “I am going to prepare a place for you.” The one preparing it will also return to receive us; the promise concerns more than a desirable destination. The second stanza acknowledges trials and clouds along the road without making heaven an escape. The third centres on seeing the Lord's face, rather than streets or jewels. Chinese churches often sing it at memorials, and its joyful sound is appropriate. Paul says not to grieve as those without hope, but does not say not to grieve. Telling people that we still weep, while carrying hope within, reaches mourners more closely than simply urging joy.
