About this hymn

Watts included this hymn in the Communion section of his 1707 collection: it was written for receiving the sacrament. Often considered among the finest English hymns, it draws strength from restraint. Standing before the cross, the poet reassesses what he boasts in, loves and offers. The first stanza echoes Paul's confession that former gains are now loss because of Christ (Philippians 3:7–8). The last presses the response to its full extent: the whole person, beyond a partial offering. In Galatians 6:14, Paul says, “But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ”. The hymn is especially suitable before Communion, sung slowly and gently without forceful accompaniment.

When to use this hymn
