About this hymn

Via Dolorosa is Latin for the way of sorrow, the Jerusalem route traditionally associated with the Lord carrying his cross. The song is almost a narrative: crowds, scourging, a crown of thorns and steps towards Golgotha. Its power comes from restraint. Rather than explaining the event's meaning throughout, it describes what happens and lets listeners stand beside the road themselves. Only at the end does it make clear that he walked this way willingly. It fits Holy Week especially well alongside Scripture readings. A solo or choir presentation is more effective than congregational singing, since its melody and language are strongly narrative.

When to use this hymn

Holy Week and Good Friday; choir presentations or solos; alongside readings from John 19.
