About this hymn

First Corinthians 10 describes Communion as sharing in Christ’s blood and body, explaining that the many are one body. Chapter 11 commands the church to proclaim the Lord’s death by eating the bread and drinking the cup until he comes. Romans 6 explains that baptism signifies believers’ participation in Christ’s death and their walking in resurrection newness. This song therefore places Communion and baptism within one gospel story. Christ’s once-for-all giving of his body and blood is the foundation; the sacraments point to his promise and call the congregation to receive by faith, remain united, and die to sin while living to God. Participation in an outward rite does not automatically save. The assurance of the sacraments remains in Christ and his completed salvation.

When to use this hymn
