The pilgrim journey · Companionship and guidance
This hymn describes trust as a relationship in which we keep learning: receiving the Lord’s word, believing the salvation he has already accomplished and asking him to help us rely on him more. Sweetness points to the security of fellowship with the Saviour, so that amid weakness or doubt we can still pray to him according to the promises we know. Hebrews invites believers to come before the throne of grace precisely because Jesus sympathises with human weakness; amid suffering, Paul also confidently entrusts what he has committed to the Lord. As we sing, we can remember one occasion of being sustained in prayer and ask for grace in the matter we currently find hardest to trust him with. Such practice turns past experience into help for obedience today, allowing faith gradually to take root.
