Redeeming grace · The incarnation
The hymn remembers Christ leaving heavenly honour for human lowliness, lack, rejection and the cross, inviting singers to answer him with open hearts. John records the world failing to recognise the true light who came, and promises God’s children’s status to those receiving him; Philippians joins the Lord’s humiliation and exaltation. Sung welcome can enter daily choices: letting his Word correct plans, leaving time for those in need and willingly releasing pride that preserves appearances. Christmas and Christ’s suffering meet in reflection, helping us learn sincere commitment through the Saviour’s self-giving.
