The glory of God · Creation and sovereignty
While serving as a pastor in New York State, Babcock often walked in the countryside. Before going out, he would tell people he was going to see his Father's world. This hymn grew from those words. The first two stanzas are almost entirely scenes from nature: birdsong, morning light and growing things. They sound as though someone is really standing in the open country. The third stanza turns abruptly: this is the Father's world, yet evil seems to be winning. It faces that tension and immediately declares that God still reigns. The hymn's strength lies in this sequence: seeing the world's beauty, acknowledging its evil, then entrusting both to its ruler. It works well with children and families. In times of disaster or public upheaval, the third stanza carries particular weight.
