About this hymn

Budry was a pastor in French-speaking Switzerland. Later accounts connect the hymn to his wife's death, but authoritative hymn dictionaries have not adopted that claim, and different traditions give different composition dates. Receive it as a story rather than established history. The hymn centres on “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57). Its tune comes from Handel's Judas Maccabaeus, originally a march celebrating triumph, and fits this setting. The final stanza asks the Lord to deliver us from fear of death, carrying victory through to our own end. Especially powerful in congregational Easter Sunday singing, it is also often used at Christian funerals.
