About this hymn

Zechariah 13:1 promises, “In that day there will be a fountain opened to David’s house and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.” Cowper connects that fountain to the cross: “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7). Cowper himself suffered lifelong depression, survived several attempts to end his life, and repeatedly doubted whether he stood outside grace. Working with Newton, he wrote many hymns for the Olney gatherings, mostly in 1771–1772. A severe relapse in 1773 interrupted the writing project. This matters pastorally: someone who writes of assurance may not always feel assured. Blood imagery can be difficult for modern listeners, but the Old Testament sacrificial system supplies the gospel's grammar. Without it, forgiveness becomes an empty phrase.

When to use this hymn

Communion and Holy Week; its background can be shared when caring for brothers and sisters with depression or wavering faith.
