Redeeming grace · Resurrection and victory
Opening with the battle over and victory settled, the hymn counts the contents of that victory stanza by stanza: death's power overcome, the chains of the grave broken, and heaven's gates open to the redeemed. Colossians 2:15 says, “Having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” In Paul's account, the cross is a public victory procession. The hymn begins and ends with three Alleluias, making it sound like a moving celebration. As an Easter morning opening, it can bring people into that morning more quickly than an explanation.
