About this hymn

John 15:13 says that no love is greater than laying down one's life for friends. This song goes a step further with Paul's teaching: Christ died for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8), and while we were God's enemies we were reconciled to him through his Son's death (Romans 5:10). That extends beyond friendship. The melody moves gently, without dramatic rises and falls. For a song about sacrifice, this is appropriate: true self-giving is often quiet. When leading worship, do not hurry from this song into celebration. A period of silence can carry more weight than another song.

When to use this hymn
