About this hymn

A metrical version of Psalm 23 from the 1650 Scottish Psalter, this belongs to a project rendering the whole Psalter for congregational singing. It sought closeness to Scripture while working within metre and earlier metrical versions, rather than preserving every word unchanged. Its strength at funerals rests first on the psalm, beyond the familiar melody. The opening says, “Yahweh is my shepherd; I shall lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1); the closing looks ahead: “Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house forever.” (Psalm 23:6). Chinese churches use it at weddings and funerals. When leading it, remind people that the fourth verse describes walking through the valley of the shadow of death, rather than remaining there.
