About this hymn

Each stanza begins in darkness and lets light enter. Before healing the blind man, the Lord says, “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5); elsewhere he says more fully, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12). Bliss wrote both words and tune, and his work circulated widely through Moody’s evangelistic meetings. At thirty-eight, he and his wife died in the Ashtabula, Ohio, railway disaster. A surviving trunk held an unpublished text that became I Will Sing of My Redeemer. The third stanza’s movement from blindness to sight draws on John 9: first someone cannot see, then someone is willing to admit that blindness.

When to use this hymn
