The glory of God · Loving kindness and mercy
Psalm 3's heading places it during David's flight from his son Absalom: betrayal by close family and escape from the capital. In that situation he says, “But you, Yahweh, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.” (Psalm 3:3). Lifting a head is a physical action. Shame and despair lower it; God raises it. “Hope in God! For I shall still praise him” (Psalm 42:11) expresses the same movement another way. This song suits pastoral visits and companionship, and congregational singing after humiliation or defeat.
