About this hymn

The hymn places the Lord’s return at dawn: the long night passes and victorious light breaks. Malachi’s promise uses that image: “the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings.” (Malachi 4:2). Each stanza begins with his certain coming, describing the fulfilment of glory, victory and justice. The last rests on “Yes, come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20). Brownlie, a Scottish pastor, included it in Hymns of the East. His preface says the collection offers relatively little strict translation, drawing more on selection and re-creation. Modern hymnology has found no corresponding Greek original. Attributing this as a Greek hymn translated by Brownlie is therefore imprecise; it is closer to an original English hymn drawing on Eastern tradition.

When to use this hymn

Advent, Sundays on the last things and Easter morning; teaching on Malachi 4.
