The glory of God · Goodness and provision
Storm wrote this poem while serving with the Salvation Army, simply calling it “Thanks”. Its lasting appeal lies in a thanksgiving list that includes more than good things: roses and thorns, sunshine and storms, prayers answered and unanswered. That last item is hardest. It shifts thanksgiving from what I have received to who God is; otherwise counting blessings becomes a review of good fortune. Not long after writing these lines, Storm suffered an illness that disabled his back and restricted his movement for the rest of his life. He did not revise the poem. Chinese churches often sing it at Thanksgiving and year-end services. It also suits people who have experienced loss, provided those singing understand that its gratitude is not superficial.
