The pilgrim journey · Service and gifts
This hymn breaks offering oneself into specific things: life, time, hands, feet, voice, money, will and heart. That is much harder than vaguely offering everything, because each item can be tested. Havergal later sold treasured jewellery and gave the proceeds, saying the hymn had pressed her to be honest. Her particular action need not be copied by everyone, but its sequence is worth learning: make the words concrete, then discover whether you truly mean them. First Peter 4:10 calls each person to serve others with the gift received. The offering is made to God but finds its practical expression among brothers and sisters. The hymn suits dedication and the installation of ministry workers.
