Confession and repentance · Following and obedience
This hymn calls believers to take up courageously the responsibility of following Jesus, while clearly attributing the source of their strength to the Lord. It reminds us that personal bravery and human strength both have their limits, and that we need to rely on the Saviour through prayer. The spiritual armour described in Ephesians gives the image of a good soldier specific content: holding to the truth, practising righteousness, proclaiming the gospel of peace and remaining watchful in prayer. The hope of victory at the hymn’s end also gives direction to our present perseverance. As we sing, we can consider a situation that calls for faithfulness and ask the Lord for gentle yet firm courage, so that under pressure we remain willing to be honest, love others and obey his word.
