The pilgrim journey · Prayer and drawing near

About this hymn

The longing for the Lord’s dwelling in Psalm 84 becomes, in this song, a communal prayer to draw near to God. The psalmist treasures the blessing of coming to worship in the temple; believers today can come before the heavenly Father through Jesus, who has already opened the way. Ephesians explains further that through Christ, in the Holy Spirit, we share the grace of access to the Father. Those leading worship can begin with this acceptance that has already been given and invite the congregation to open their hearts to the Lord. Our longing for his presence can also become practice after the gathering: a willingness to listen to Scripture, love one another and obey him in daily life. This gives the direction the church seeks together a concrete response in how we live.
