The glory of God · Creation and sovereignty
The picture of heaven and earth, seas and fields rejoicing together comes from Psalm 96’s praise of Yahweh’s kingship. That joy also points to the hope at the psalm’s end: the Lord is coming to judge the world in righteousness and faithfulness. Creation can rejoice because the One who reigns is holy and just; he sees human suffering and will deal with the world’s injustice. When the church sings this song, we can read the whole psalm together so that solemn reverence accompanies our rejoicing. Faced with discouraging news and experiences, we therefore continue hoping and learn to treat people justly and protect the weak where we live, responding in our lives to the sovereignty we confess.
