Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
Between the King’s glory and his willingness to suffer, this song leads the congregation to see the depth of the love of the cross. Philippians 2 describes Christ humbling himself, obeying to the point of death and then being exalted by God. His majesty makes this self-giving all the more precious. The imagery of cleansing and robes in the song can be connected with salvation and righteousness in Isaiah 61, reminding believers that their acceptance comes as the Lord’s gift. Those reconciled to the heavenly Father through Christ can bring their shame and failings before him, receive forgiveness and continue following. Such thanksgiving faces the cost of the cross and also expresses hope towards eternity with the Lord.
Good Friday, Communion, thanksgiving for salvation and responses to sermons on the cross.
