Confession and repentance · Renewal and sanctification
Using the image of thirsty ground waiting for rain, this song expresses the church’s longing for spiritual renewal. Ezekiel’s showers of blessing appear within God’s promise to shepherd and restore his people; Psalm 85 also leads the community to ask for revival so that they may rejoice in the Lord again. As we sing, thanksgiving for grace already received and continued requests for the Lord to renew us can coexist. We can pray specifically for places marked by coldness, division and lost love, while being willing to heed the Lord’s correction. Such prayer for revival concerns transformation in the life of the whole community: loving the Lord more, confessing sin more honestly and responding through serving one another to the showers of grace we seek.
