The pilgrim journey · Mission and the gospel
This prayer asks for Jesus’ light to shine into darkness and for the Holy Spirit to renew people’s hearts, so that grace and mercy may flow to more places. John declares that Jesus is the light of life; 2 Corinthians explains that God shines in our hearts so that we know the glory revealed in Christ. The song’s light therefore points both to proclaiming the gospel and to our accepting the scrutiny of truth. As we pray for renewal in the world, we can first bring our own prejudice, coldness and hidden sins before the Lord and then participate in his work through humble witness. May a community that has been illuminated reflect Christ in word and action, so that people come to know him through seeing kindness and righteousness.
