About this hymn

Philippians 2 may preserve one of the earliest Christian hymns: the one in God's form empties himself and takes a servant's form. This song's title compresses the tension into servant and king. Mark 10:45 is more direct: the Son of Man came to serve rather than be served, and to give his life as a ransom for many. The refrain invites us to “follow his steps” (1 Peter 2:21), a point that is easily sung too lightly. Serving others means yielding rights, beyond adopting an attitude. The hymn suits ordinations, installing ministry workers and teaching on the true meaning of authority.

When to use this hymn

Holy Week, ordinations and installing ministry workers; teaching on Philippians 2 or the pattern of service.
