Speaking as a flock, this prayer comes before Jesus and asks him to feed, guide and protect us, and to seek us when we stray. Belonging is an important foundation throughout the hymn: since the Saviour has redeemed us in love, we can confidently ask him to watch over us. The pastoral picture in Psalm 23 echoes the revelation in John of the Good Shepherd laying down his life for the sheep. The hymn also acknowledges human sin and weakness and expresses a willingness to do the Lord’s will early in life. When parents and children or a group sing together, they can bring before the Lord one matter requiring wisdom that day. Children and adults can learn together to hear the Lord’s voice and live out the Shepherd’s lovingkindness as they care for one another.
