Deuteronomy 8:2 instructs Israel, “You shall remember all the way which Yahweh your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness”. They are to remember the wilderness journey, beyond the day of entering Canaan. This song concerns the road recognised only in retrospect: at the time it felt simply hard; afterwards we discover grace all along it. Psalm 23:6 promises, “Surely goodness and loving kindness shall follow me all the days of my life”. The original verb for following can mean pursuing: grace is chasing after us.
