Our misery in sin · Lost and sought
Blind from infancy, Crosby wrote thousands of hymns and worked for years in evangelism among New York’s poor. In her own account, Doane first suggested the title Rescue the Perishing. Later, while addressing workers, she strongly felt that someone’s mother’s son must be brought back that night. She invited a response; a young man of about eighteen came forward, and they prayed together. Only after returning home did she write the hymn. Jude’s instruction carries the same urgency: “and some save, snatching them out of the fire with fear” (Jude 1:23). The third stanza pictures broken strings deep in the heart that can sound again through a patient touch. Rescue turns from harsh rebuke towards gentleness and patience, trusting that grace can still awaken a heart wounded by sin.
