About this hymn

Often sung as a straightforward hymn of happiness, its framework is actually Christ's ascension and return. The refrain's call to rejoice draws on “Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, ‘Rejoice!’” (Philippians 4:4), written by Paul in prison, so this joy does not arise from favourable circumstances. The final stanza looks ahead: “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). Before singing, explain that its joy has a foundation: the Lord already enthroned, who will also return.

When to use this hymn

Ascension Day, the Easter season and Sundays on the last things; teaching on Philippians 4 or First Thessalonians 4.
