Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
One of the most frequently sung Chinese cross-centred worship songs of the past thirty years, it differs from traditional hymns in viewpoint. Older hymns often begin by seeing a cross on a distant hill. This song begins with the singer, speaking from beneath the cross. Such writing could become merely emotional, but this song does not: the refrain returns to substitutionary atonement itself, singing what Christ has accomplished rather than the singer's feelings. It is particularly suitable before Communion, when the congregation has heard the words over the bread and needs a song to gather its attention again. During Holy Week, place it alongside “The Old Rugged Cross”: one looks from a distance and the other from nearby, complementing each other.
