About this hymn

Psalm 103 begins strikingly: David speaks to his own soul, calling it to bless Yahweh, rather than addressing God. Praise sometimes needs to be awakened instead of naturally rising as a feeling. He then counts five things: forgiveness, healing, redemption of life, a crown, and satisfied desires. Forgiveness comes first. Notice that order. If counting blessings begins with health and success, it can easily become a review of good fortune. This song suits opening worship and singing to oneself in personal devotions.

When to use this hymn
