About this hymn

The three original stanzas of 1869 view Christ from three positions: the shepherd’s care, the suffering Saviour who shed his blood, and the risen King reigning for ever. The familiar description of a returning King belongs to a later variant, rather than the 1869 text. This makes the song a brief Christology, beyond lively praise. Psalm 150’s closing gives praise its broadest scope: “Let everything that has breath praise Yah! Praise Yah!” (Psalm 150:6). Crosby’s hymns are sometimes criticised as overly sweet, but the second stanza is a counterexample, treating his death for us with weight. The repeated refrain helps children and congregations remember and join, fitting its first publication in a Sunday school songbook. That is an analysis of function, rather than a compositional explanation left by Crosby.
