Ephesians 2 describes the church joined together in Christ, growing into a holy temple; First Peter says that God’s called people proclaim his excellence. Power in this song therefore comes from the Spirit’s building of a community and giving it a witness, rather than from individuals controlling others or the church seeking political or cultural dominance. God joins people of different backgrounds into one body: gifts serve others, and authority accepts responsibility in the pattern of the cross. As the congregation sings, it can examine its unity, holiness and gospel mission, lest the bold tone slide into spiritual triumphalism.
