About this hymn

Luther adapted Psalm 130 into a hymn a congregation could sing, one of the Reformation's earliest works. Its centre is not how deep the depths are, but the turn in verses 3–4: “If you, Yah, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, therefore you are feared.” (Psalm 130:3–4). Notice that last purpose. Forgiveness produces reverence rather than carelessness. This runs against human instinct but consistently reflects Scripture. The hymn has long been used for confession and funerals; Bach composed an entire cantata on it. Sing it slowly. It is a voice from the depths and cannot be hurried.

When to use this hymn
