The pilgrim journey · Prayer and drawing near
By asking that our eyes, ears and tongues be opened, this hymn expresses a heart willing to be illuminated by the truth, to listen and to respond. Psalm 119 asks God to help us understand the wonders in his word; the prayer in Ephesians also longs for the eyes of believers’ hearts to be enlightened so that they may better know their calling. Such listening extends to action, just as James urges us to do the word we have heard. As we sing, we can first set aside the urge to prove ourselves right, allow Scripture to examine our existing ideas and then ask the Lord to turn the truth we receive into honest, gentle and helpful words. Quiet waiting and specific obedience belong together in this prayer.
