The pilgrim journey · Unity and love
This processional hymn pictures Christ leading people forward and emphasises the church’s connection in one faith. With the cross before us, we can move beyond our different backgrounds and remember that we belong to the same Lord. Ephesians 4 explains the foundation of church unity; chapter 6 connects spiritual battle with truth, righteousness, faith, the gospel of peace and prayer. The hymn’s soldier imagery should be understood within this scriptural context: courageously holding to faith, resisting evil and treating people with love. Singing together can become a pledge to support one another, helping lonely and weary believers know that they have companions on the heavenly road.
