With imagery as deep and wide as the ocean, this hymn helps us meditate on how Christ’s love surrounds, sustains and leads those who belong to him. The prayer in Ephesians longs for believers together to understand the length, breadth, height and depth of Christ’s love; amid suffering and danger, Romans confirms that the Saviour’s love will not forsake us. Such meditation allows our hearts to slow down and turn from anxious calculations towards the grace we have already received. As we sing, we can give thanks for the way we have been kept in the past and pray for strength for the road still ahead. Those strengthened by love also learn to widen their patience towards others, so that the church becomes a community willing to welcome, help and grow together.
