About this hymn

Bode wrote this hymn for the confirmation of his three children. It carries a father's clear awareness of what their promises will encounter. The second stanza names two particular challenges: enemies around them and desires within, one external and one internal. Each stanza centres on the petition for the Lord to remain near, rather than human resolve. The order matters: I can keep walking because you draw near, rather than following because I can keep my promise unaided. Chinese churches often sing it at baptisms and confirmations. It also suits occasions of commitment for young people, especially when their enthusiasm is strong and they need this reminder.

When to use this hymn
