Confession and repentance · Surrender and dedication
Beginning with joy at hearing Jesus’ name, this hymn considers his redemption, sympathy and continuing care, and responds in love. First John traces our love back to the grace revealed in God’s initiative in sending his beloved Son; John also connects loving the Lord with keeping his word. As we sing, we can remember one particular kindness we have received, allowing the simple words to carry real gratitude. Loving Jesus gradually affects how we use our time, treat those who are weak and handle conflict. The love the Lord has shown first also sustains those who feel cold or unworthy, making them willing to draw near to him again and learn to respond within grace.
