About this hymn

This hymn is an invitation for the faithful to come joyfully. Its refrain repeats the call to adore three times, turning the whole song into an action. Its theological centre is a creedal confession of the Son as God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten rather than made, of one being with the Father. This directly echoes the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed: the Son is eternally begotten of the Father and of one substance with him. That was the fourth-century dispute's crucial point. If Christ were merely the highest creature, Christmas would not call us to kneel. John 1:14 says, “The Word became flesh and lived among us.” Christmas thus confesses that the Creator entered creation. The hymn is especially powerful sung together to open Christmas Sunday worship.

When to use this hymn
