Redeeming grace · Precious blood and cleansing

About this hymn

The hymn advances through a question and answer: what can wash away sin? The answer is always singular. That exclusiveness gives it weight. It explicitly rules out human good works and repeatedly excludes every other source of cleansing. Hebrews 9:22 says, “According to the law, nearly everything is cleansed with blood, and apart from shedding of blood there is no remission.” First John 1:7 adds, “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Lowry, a Baptist pastor, wrote both words and music. The memorable tune suits Sunday school and evangelistic meetings. Before singing, explain that its repeated exclusions bring people exhausted by trying to save themselves back to Christ's accomplished redemption.

When to use this hymn
