Redeeming grace · The cross and substitutionary atonement
Beginning with wonder before the Saviour, this hymn focuses on Christ’s love in suffering for sinners and looks towards future praise before him. Romans explains that Christ died for us while we were still weak and sinful, revealing God’s love in taking the initiative. First Peter connects his work of bearing sin with believers’ new lives of leaving sin and practising righteousness. As we meditate on the cross, we can openly acknowledge our unworthiness without remaining in self-reproach. The Saviour’s self-giving brings forgiveness and also urges us to learn sympathy for others, so that our wonder in worship becomes a response of love willing to bear a cost.
